Measure Words (量词)
Overview
Mandarin requires a measure word (量词, liàngcí) between any number or demonstrative (这/那) and a noun. There is no equivalent in English — they categorize nouns by physical shape, function, or social context. Omitting a measure word when counting is grammatically incorrect. 个 (gè) is the default “catch-all” measure word when you don’t know the specific one.

Exceptions — no measure word needed:
- 天 (tiān) — days: 三天 (not 三个天)

Pitfalls
❌ Omitting the measure word
三书 ❌ → 三本书 ✅ 几书 ❌ → 几本书 ✅
❌ Using 个 for everything While 个 works as a fallback and native speakers may accept it conversationally, fixed pairings (书→本, 鱼→条, 纸→张) sound more natural and are tested on HSK.
❌ Same noun, wrong measure word changes meaning
一个蛋糕 (a whole cake) ≠ 一块蛋糕 (a piece/slice of cake) Measure word choice can shift meaning, not just style.

Notes
- 量词 classification is mostly logical (shape/size/function) but some pairings must simply be memorized (书→本, 车→辆, 花→朵).
- For HSK 1–2: master 个, 本, 只, 张, 条, 杯, 碗, 位.
- For HSK 3+: add 把, 块, 种, 些, and context-shifting pairs.
