Meaning

The general negative 'not', placed before verbs, adjectives, and adverbs: 不是 'is not', 不好 'not good'. The verb 有 is the exception — it takes 没 instead.

Pronunciation Note

Tone sandhi: 不 is bù (4th tone), but becomes bú (2nd tone) before another 4th-tone syllable — 不是 bú shì, 不去 bú qù.
